ASIC Resistant
A mining algorithm designed to deny specialized chips a big edge over everyday hardware.
ASIC-resistant algorithms try to keep mining open to ordinary computers. They lean on memory-heavy puzzles that custom chips can't speed up cheaply, so a regular graphics card stays competitive. The goal is a wider, more decentralized pool of miners.
It rarely holds forever. Ethereum's old Ethash kept GPUs relevant for years, yet ASIC makers eventually adapted. Monero takes a harder line, periodically changing its algorithm to brick any ASIC that appears. Since Ethereum moved to proof of stake in 2022, this debate matters mainly for the remaining proof-of-work coins.
