Yakovenko Wants Solana's Nakamoto Coefficient Far Above 20
Solana's co-founder wants the network's Nakamoto coefficient far above its current 20 validators, backed by Firedancer and a native AI-agent standard.
Anatoly Yakovenko wants Solana to stop being a network that roughly 20 validators could halt. The co-founder used a recent presentation to lay out a long-term strategy built around a single number: the Nakamoto coefficient, the minimum count of validators needed to censor transactions or break consensus. Solana's sits near 20. Yakovenko's plan is to push it far higher, and he was blunt that the work will take years.
The number he's chasing
A coefficient of roughly 20 is not a trophy, and Yakovenko is not treating it as one. The figure is held down by how much of Solana's stake clusters in the same data centers and the same geographic regions, a concentration that makes the validator set easier to pressure than its raw count suggests. Lifting the number means spreading consensus power away from the dominant validation firms that anchor it now. The stated goal is a validator set no outside party can lean on, insulated by spread rather than promises. Yakovenko compared the effort to drafting a constitution: a process measured in years, not release cycles.
MCP now, Firedancer next
The piece already shipping is the Model Context Protocol, a standard that lets AI agents read the chain and operate wallets directly. That is the near-term work. Behind it sits Firedancer, the alternative validator client Solana has counted on to clear its throughput ceiling. The protocol's own documentation clocks Firedancer above one million transactions per second in simulation. Mainnet has not seen that figure.
Aimed at Ethereum's turf
Yakovenko framed the whole program as a move on institutional money, where the sell is not raw speed but neutrality and reliability over long horizons. That is Ethereum's home ground. His argument is that no network can credibly pitch institutions on censorship resistance while a coefficient of 20 hangs over it. The claim is only worth as much as the delivery behind it.
The next checkpoints are concrete. Firedancer moving into mainnet in stages, and active validators adopting the MCP standard, both slated for the coming quarters. The open question is whether that simulated million transactions per second survives contact with a live network, and whether the coefficient actually climbs.
