Cardano Hands Core Software to Outside Firms as Van Rossem Fork Goes Live
Input Output will hand Cardano's core software to outside firms through 2027, as the Van Rossem hard fork goes live on July 18.
Cardano's founding developer is stepping back. Input Output said Friday it will hand control of the network's core software to outside specialist firms starting in August, a handover it plans to complete by 2027. The Haskell node, the Plutus smart-contract platform, the Daedalus wallet, and Hydra scaling tech all move to external hands.
Who takes over
Two firms anchor the new setup. Se7en Labs, a development shop with a Solana infrastructure background, and Teragone, the cryptographic research team that already runs Mithril, Cardano's stake-based signature protocol, are among those taking the reins. The structural bet underneath is redundancy: rather than one canonical client, at least three independent node implementations will run in parallel, no longer just the original Haskell build but new ones in Rust and Go, overseen by the community bodies Intersect and Pragma. Charles Hoskinson called it the final push of the Voltaire era, the decentralization phase Cardano has chased since 2024. The new motto: "Built by many, owned by all."
Van Rossem goes first
The reshuffle lands next to a live upgrade. Cardano's Van Rossem hard fork activates on mainnet July 18 at 21:44 UTC, pushing the chain to Protocol Version 11. Delegated community representatives ratified it on July 13 with 77.63% approval. The headline change is a batch of new Plutus built-in functions meant to cut what it costs to execute smart contracts, the unglamorous efficiency work that tends to decide whether developers stay.
What traders are pricing
The positioning is optimistic. Open interest in ADA futures sits near $193 million with a long-to-short ratio of 2.84, so most of that money is wagering on a spike. The longer chart offers thin support for it. ADA has ground lower since August 2025, its 50-week exponential moving average has slipped under the 200-week, and the weekly RSI reads 34, a step from oversold. The 2024 high near $1.20 is a long way up.
The real wager here is organizational. Input Output is turning toward research and new ventures through IO Labs and IO Ventures, betting that a loose federation of outside firms can ship faster than a single company running everything did. The first proof point comes July 18, when Van Rossem goes live.

Price chart
↑ 4.02% · 7DMarket data from OKX / CoinGecko. Not financial advice.
ADA trades at $0.1667, up 2.0% on the day. Zoom out and the bounce looks smaller: the coin is down 1.2% over the past week and 3.6% over the past month, so today's green is a dent in a slow decline, not a break from it.
Market cap sits at $6.12B on $279.3M of 24-hour volume. That is functional liquidity rather than a surge of fresh interest. Whether the daily gain sticks or gets reabsorbed into the 30-day downtrend is what a single up session leaves unresolved.
