XRP Demand Cools on Three Fronts as Funding Flashes a Contrarian Signal
On-chain wallets, futures open interest, and ETF flows all fell in early July, but XRP's deeply negative funding rates have analysts eyeing a rebound.
XRP's demand drained from three directions at once in early July. On-chain wallets thinned, futures traders cut leverage, and the spot ETFs bled. The clearest single number came on July 8, when US spot XRP funds posted a $7.29 million net outflow, their biggest one-day withdrawal since March. One data point, though, cut the other way, and it has some analysts leaning bullish.
Three metrics turn
Start on chain. Santiment counted 25,350 active wallets on the XRP Ledger, the second-lowest daily reading of all of 2026. New wallet creation fell harder still, down to 2,130, the weakest since November 2024. The firm read it as fatigue rather than panic. After late-June dip-buying, it said, traders 'are waiting for a real catalyst instead of chasing another small bounce.'
Derivatives told the same story. Open interest in XRP futures on Binance dropped to roughly 397 million XRP, its lowest in more than three months. A falling reading during a price slide usually means one thing: leverage getting trimmed. One analyst framed it as repositioning, a pause while investors 'await a clearer market direction.'
The ETF numbers stung more for the company XRP kept. Bitcoin and Ethereum funds swung to net inflows in the week ending July 10, per SoSoValue. XRP went the other way and closed the week red, snapping a nine-week inflow streak. Steady money rotated out just as the majors pulled it in, ending a rare run of consistency.
The contrarian read
Not everyone sees only weakness. Analyst Darkfost flagged XRP's 30-day funding rates on Binance, which have turned deeply negative after the token shed roughly 70% from its July 2025 high. That kind of one-sided pessimism has front-run turns before. Darkfost pointed to April 2025, when a comparable setup near $1.25 came right before a 126% rally.
Whether it repeats depends on more than sentiment. Santiment sees potential catalysts away from the chart, from RLUSD adoption to payment volume and the EVM sidechain, any of which could pull users back if the narrative catches. None has yet. For now spot flows, not leverage, look like the thing to watch, and the next decisive move waits on a catalyst that hasn't arrived.
The market read
Price chart
↑ 3.87% · 7DMarket data from OKX / CoinGecko. Not financial advice.
XRP is changing hands near $1.11, and the tape is quiet in every timeframe: down 0.7% on the day, up 0.2% on the week, and off 0.9% over 30 days. That is a coin going nowhere in particular. Its $69.20B market cap keeps it firmly among the majors, but $911.1M in 24-hour volume is thin for that size, the kind of low-participation trading that matches the cooling demand on-chain and in the futures pits.
Flat is not the same as settled. Compressed markets like this one tend to break hard once they finally pick a side, and with funding stretched to one extreme, that resolution could cut either way rather than only lower.
