Tether Brings Its $23 Billion Gold Reserve to Lender Ledn
XAUT holders will be able to borrow against tokenized gold on Ledn later this year, turning bullion into bitcoin-style collateral.
Tether is putting its gold pile to work. The stablecoin issuer is bringing Tether Gold, its tokenized bullion product known as XAUT, to crypto lender Ledn, which will let clients borrow against it later this year. Tether says it holds around $23 billion of physical gold backing the token.
How the lending works
Each XAUT represents one troy ounce, stored in vaults in Switzerland. Ledn is adding the token alongside bitcoin and USDT, extending the bitcoin-backed lending model it has run for years. The pitch is simple: tokenized gold can behave like digital collateral, letting holders pull liquidity without selling the metal.
That kind of lending has long sat with central banks, large financial institutions and bullion dealers. Tether and Ledn want it on crypto rails, where gold can move like collateral instead of sitting idle in a vault. It is the same argument that turned bitcoin into something you borrow against rather than just hold.
Avoiding the 2022 pitfalls
Ledn says client collateral stays held 1:1, never lent out or used to generate yield. The distinction is deliberate. It separates Ledn from the lenders that collapsed in the 2022 crypto winter after recycling customer deposits. "As digital assets become an increasingly important part of the global economy, demand is growing for solutions that combine long-term ownership with financial flexibility," Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said.
Tether's growing gold stash
The deal fits a company that has spent years spending USDT profits on everything but stablecoins. Tether has amassed roughly 140 metric tons of physical bullion, ranking it among the largest corporate gold holders anywhere. It has bought into precious-metals marketplace Gold.com and tied up with financing firm Antalpha to widen XAUT's use in lending and physical redemption. Borrowing against the token goes live later this year.
