Nearly 40 firms including JPMorgan and BlackRock are testing DTCC tokenization of US stocks and Treasuries, with commercial launch set for October.

Nearly 40 of Wall Street's biggest firms are testing what it takes to turn a stock into a token. The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, the plumbing behind almost every US securities trade, began production testing of tokenized equities and Treasuries in July. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and BlackRock are among the participants. The full commercial program is scheduled for October, which puts a hard date on something the industry has spent years only talking about.

What DTCC is testing

The trial goes after the assets that move real money, not the fringe. Russell 1000 shares, major ETFs and US Treasury bonds are being converted into digital tokens on DTCC's rails. The detail that matters is who is running it. DTCC is not a startup chasing a narrative. It clears the market and sits at the center of US settlement, the layer where trades actually become final. When that institution starts minting tokenized Treasuries in a live production test, tokenization stops being a conference pitch and starts looking like infrastructure other firms will have to connect to.

The London front

The same three banks are running a parallel play across the Atlantic. BlackRock, JPMorgan and Goldman have joined 51 other companies in a UK government tokenization taskforce led by HM Treasury. The aim is to push blockchain into wholesale markets, and the first target is tokenized repo, the short-term lending that keeps the financial system liquid overnight. Repo is boring. It is also gigantic, and it is exactly where institutions want blockchain settlement to prove it can move size without breaking. Starting there is a tell: the banks care about plumbing, not retail speculation.

What's still open

The pilot hasn't answered, at least not in public, which blockchain these tokens will actually run on, and that choice will shape who captures the value. For now the tokens live in a controlled test environment with a small circle of firms. The commercial switch is scheduled to flip in October.
