What the halving is
Every 210,000 blocks — roughly four years — the halving cuts the number of new bitcoin created with each block in half. It is written into the protocol and enforces Bitcoin’s fixed 21-million supply: issuance keeps shrinking until the last coin is mined, expected around 2140.
Halvings matter to markets because they cut the flow of new supply from miners — historically the years around each halving bracketed Bitcoin’s major cycles, though past patterns are no guarantee. The estimate on this page assumes the protocol’s 10-minute block target; the real date drifts as network hashrate changes.
