Satoshi
The smallest unit of bitcoin, equal to one hundred-millionth of a single coin.
One bitcoin divides into 100,000,000 satoshis, so a single sat is 0.00000001 BTC. The unit is named after Bitcoin's creator and lets the network handle tiny amounts even as a whole coin runs into tens of thousands of dollars.
Small transactions and Lightning Network payments are often quoted in sats rather than fractions of a bitcoin. "Stacking sats" is the habit of accumulating bitcoin in small, regular amounts — a kind of dollar-cost averaging.
