Ripple Joins x402 Foundation as Coinbase Hands Off the Protocol

Ripple signed on as a Primary Member of the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation, putting XRP and RLUSD inside a payment standard Coinbase built.

Ripple has joined the x402 Foundation as a Primary Member, taking a top-tier seat at the Linux Foundation body that now stewards x402, the payment protocol Coinbase built and has since given away. The foundation launched officially once that transfer completed.

What x402 actually does

x402 embeds payment capability directly into HTTP interactions. That is the whole idea. Rather than bolting a checkout onto a web request, the payment rides inside the request itself, so an AI agent can buy a service, settle an API bill, or pay another automated system with no human in the loop. The foundation's stated goal is a common standard that lets agents, APIs, and applications move money as easily as they already move data. Governance is meant to be open and unbiased, which in practice means Coinbase no longer owns the roadmap for the thing Coinbase wrote.

Where XRP fits

Ripple's angle is infrastructure. The company says it has built tools and infrastructure for this on the XRP Ledger, and that with x402 support, agents can now transact using XRP and RLUSD. That lands Ripple's ledger and its stablecoin inside a standard whose reference implementation came out of a rival exchange, which is a cheaper way to reach machine-to-machine payments than trying to define the standard alone.

Markus Infanger, senior vice president at RippleX, kept the framing on standards. Open standards, he said, form the foundation of reliable and interoperable machine-to-machine payments. He added that Ripple will contribute to the foundation's technical and governance efforts to keep those standards applied consistently across the industry. Translation: Ripple wants a vote on how agent payments get specified, not just a listing when they do.

The part that isn't settled

Ripple's stated premise is that as AI agents take on a greater role in transaction processes, the industry will need payment infrastructure that is fast, reliable, and interoperable. Note the tense. That is a bet on traffic that hasn't shown up yet, and joining early is how you get to shape the rails before anyone knows how much volume runs over them.

Ripple has not disclosed how much agent activity the XRP Ledger handles today, and neither the company nor the Linux Foundation put a number on what a Primary Member seat commits Ripple to. The open question is narrower than the press language suggests: whether a standard designed to be asset-neutral ends up with any settlement asset getting first-class treatment, and whether XRP or RLUSD is that asset.

Market data from OKX / CoinGecko. Not financial advice.

XRP trades at $1.11, up 3.7% over the past 24 hours. That daily move sits on top of a softer stretch: the token is down 1.6% over seven days and down 2.8% over 30. In other words, the bounce recovers a day, not a month. Market cap stands at $68.83B.

Volume is the number worth watching here. At $1.13B over 24 hours, turnover is running at roughly 1.6% of market cap, which is thin enough that a single day's gain says more about who happened to be buying than about a change in trend. Whether the x402 news alters that depends on flows that haven't printed yet.
