OKX Europe Opens One-Way USDT-to-USDC Exit Under MiCA Pressure
OKX Europe now lets USDT holders in 30 countries convert to MiCA-compliant USDC, with an 8% bonus, as Tether refuses to seek authorization.
OKX Europe has opened an escape hatch for USDT holders. The exchange launched a one-way conversion route across 30 EU and EEA countries, letting customers deposit Tether's USDT and swap it into Circle's USDC, the stablecoin that clears MiCA. An 8% deposit bonus is attached for anyone moving funds over.
The design is deliberate. Deposits work only in USDT and conversions only into USDC, with no path back the other way. Unlike the automatic sweeps some platforms have rolled out, OKX lets customers choose the moment they convert. It targets users whose current exchange has already stopped taking USDT, or plans to force-convert leftover balances once a deadline passes.
The MiCA squeeze
Tether never sought authorization to issue USDT under MiCA, so European platforms have been peeling away support. The regulation's final transition period ended July 1. Since then, exchanges have restricted deposits, pulled trading pairs and steered customers toward approved coins, and USDC has become the default landing spot because it runs inside the EU framework. Revolut is next. It told EEA and Switzerland users they have until Aug. 31 to sell or withdraw USDT before it converts whatever is left into their base currency.
The pressure is regional, not global. DefiLlama still ranks USDT as the largest stablecoin anywhere, worth roughly $184 billion and holding about 59% of a nearly $310 billion sector. USDC sits well behind at around $73 billion.
Tether digs in
Paolo Ardoino, Tether's CEO, has no interest in changing course. He has argued repeatedly that MiCA's reserve rules, which force issuers to park part of their backing with European credit institutions, are "very dangerous when it comes to stablecoins." In July 2025 he wrote on X that Tether would revisit an application only "when MiCA becomes safer for consumers and stablecoin issuers." He concedes the stance will thin out USDT's presence on European exchanges.
Tether is not the only one retreating. Binance, the biggest exchange by volume, pulled its MiCA application in Greece after failing to win approval and began suspending services in several EU countries once the 18-month transition window closed. That leaves Coinbase, OKX and the other licensed players to fight over the customers left behind. Revolut's Aug. 31 cutoff is the next date on the calendar.
