CZ Says No Single Cause Drove Bitcoin's Drop From $126K to $60K
The Binance founder ties the first-half selloff to AI hot money, geopolitical tension and crypto's four-year cycle, not any one trigger.
There is no single villain behind the 2026 crypto crash, according to Changpeng Zhao. The Binance founder said the sharp decline across Bitcoin and altcoins in the first half of the year came from several forces hitting at once. The number behind his comments is brutal. Bitcoin peaked above $126,000 last October and has since shed roughly half its value, trading near $60,000.
Three forces behind the drop
Geopolitical tension is one piece. Capital rotating out of crypto and into artificial intelligence is another. The third is the calendar itself: the four-year cycle traders have learned to expect. CZ framed AI as the magnet pulling "hot money" out of the market, a drain he expects to weigh on prices now and reward the sector later.
The path down was not a straight line. Bitcoin sat around $89,000 at the start of the year, climbed briefly above $96,000, then slid back to roughly $60,000. CZ said he is not worried about the fundamentals. As trading volumes climb, he argued, demand for fintech products climbs with them, and he reads the fast growth of prediction markets as a net positive for price discovery and liquidity.
Regulation's uncertain timeline
Regulation got a more guarded take. CZ called bills like the Clarity Act, now moving through Congress, important but not decisive for the sector's long-term growth. He wants it passed. He also warned that if Washington drags its feet, other countries will write the rules first and take the lead.
Midterms could revive scrutiny
Then there's the politics. CZ said that if Democrats retake at least one chamber of Congress in the US midterms, Trump's support for crypto and his pardons of crypto executives could face fresh scrutiny. His answer to that prospect was short. He has "nothing to hide," he said, and is ready to provide information if asked.
