Mirroring federal policy

His personal bet runs parallel to federal policy. In March 2025, the Trump administration signed an executive order creating a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, a move to hold Bitcoin as a national asset instead of auctioning off coins seized in criminal cases. The government used to sell what it confiscated. Now the stated plan is to keep it. Lutnick's dip-buying mirrors that posture almost exactly: treat weakness as an opportunity, not a warning.

A volatile market bet

The stakes are not theoretical. Bitcoin climbed above $126,000 in late 2025 before sliding under $63,000 by the middle of 2026. That is a drawdown of roughly half in a matter of months. For a private trader, swings like that are a personal problem. For a Commerce Secretary who is also a major holder and a voice on crypto policy, they blur the line between public duty and private position.

That overlap is the part worth watching. Lutnick helps shape how Washington treats digital assets while standing to gain directly from a higher Bitcoin price. Decisions about the reserve, about how seized coins are handled, about the regulatory tone all land on a market where he is personally exposed. Critics see a conflict of interest. Supporters see an official who actually holds what he is asked to govern.

What is missing so far is a clear line between the two roles. There is no public detail on whether Lutnick steps back from decisions that move the price of the thing he keeps buying. Until that exists, every dip he buys is also a question about who the policy serves.
